My artworks and installations have been exhibited in Europe, North and South America, and Asia, and have been viewed by hundreds of thousand visitors online. Exhibitions include e.g. Arko Art Center Seoul (ROK), National Art Museum of China, Beijing (CN), Kunsthalle and Künstlerhaus Vienna (AT), Cornerhouse Manchester (UK), Tokyo Museum of Photography (JP), Yerba Buena Center for the Arts San Francisco (USA), Itaú Cultural (BR), Lunds Konsthall (SWE).

My latest research on transformative materials, ecologies, spatial strategies and the mutual influences between the material, the imagination and epistemology cristallized in the art-based research project “Liquid Things” (2012-16) which was located at the University of Applied Arts Vienna and funded by the Program for Extending the Arts (PEEK) of the Austrian Science Fund. An overview of some of Liquid Things’ results can be found in the book “Raw Flows: Fluid Mattering in Arts and Research“. Currently, I prepare two research projects which deal with the wider topic of social and societal metabolisms.

I lecture regularly at conferences, universities, and other events, including the Korean Institute of Advanced Studies (ROK) the SAR-Conference at the University of Plymouth (GB), ACC Gwangju (ROK), Universitat de Barcelona (ES), International Research Centre for Cultural Studies (AT), “Liquidity”-Practice Research Symposium at Middlesex University (GB), Ullens Center for Contemporary Art (CN), ETH Zürich (CH).

The awards I received include the International Media Art Award from ZKM Karlsruhe (GER, 2003), a Prize of Excellence from CGArts Festival Tokyo (JP, 2003), an Honorary Mention from Ars Electronica Linz in Hybrid Art (AT, 2010), and an advancement award from the Ministry of Art Saxony (GER). My work has received funding from the Austrian Ministry for Education, Art and Culture, the Austrian Science Fund, the Ministry of Art Saxony (GER), and the French Community of Belgium.

I studied philosophy and art history at the University Vienna (AT), hold a Diploma in Audiovisual Media from the Academy of Media Arts Cologne (GER), and wrote my disseration (Dr.phil.) on “The Paradigm of Material Activity in the Plastic Arts“. After teaching in many Art Academies and Universities in Austria, Belgium, Germany, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland, I am now an associated lecturer at the Zurich University of the Arts (CH) since 2013.

Roman Kirschner is an artist, researcher, writer, teacher and sometimes curator working across disciplines. His current research interests revolve around social metabolisms and ecologies, interactions with environmental microbiomes, transformative materials, spatial strategies, research methods and the mutual influence of material, imagination and epistemology. After studies of philosophy, art history and audiovisual art he wrote a PhD on „The Paradigm of Material Activity in the Plastic Arts“ at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne (GER). He was the project leader of the arts-based research project „Liquid Things“ at the University of Applied Arts Vienna (AT). He is lecturer at the Zurich University of the Arts (CH).
